The Best Dividend Stocks Outside the S&P

Investors who have benefited from the strong performance of US shares may want to reconsider how much of their portfolios depend on the S&P 500. Although the index has delivered impressive returns, its growing concentration in a handful of large technology companies means it may not provide as much diversification as many investors assume.

The artificial intelligence boom has been a major driver of market gains, but concerns about the enormous spending required to develop AI infrastructure and uncertainty surrounding technology financing have created fresh volatility. For investors looking to balance growth with more stable income, dividend-paying companies in developed markets outside the United States could offer an alternative.

You study your charts. You wait for the right setup. You follow your trading rules. And STILL… the market refuses to cooperate. Here's what most traders miss: The biggest moves may have already happened BEFORE you sit down to trade. By 9:30 AM, you could be chasing a move that's already over.

But options trading just changed. Certain major ETFs and stocks now have options trading starting at 7:30 AM Eastern. Coach Mike at NetPicks has developed new trade plans specifically for this window. He explains how to spot opportunities, manage risk, and avoid mistakes that can cost you money.

Why consider international dividend stocks?

The S&P 500 is heavily weighted towards its largest companies. Its ten biggest constituents account for close to 40% of the index, while five major technology and consumer businesses represent almost 30% of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust. This concentration means investors holding a broad US index fund may have significant exposure to a relatively small group of companies.

International developed markets offer a different investment mix. During the first ten months of 2026, the S&P 500 gained 11.8%, while the MSCI EAFE Index, which covers developed markets outside the United States and Canada, returned 12.4%, including reinvested dividends.

Valuations also suggest that overseas shares may offer better relative value. The forward price-to-earnings ratio for the S&P 500 stood at 18.5, compared with 14.4 for the iShares MSCI EAFE ETF. Based on these figures, developed-market shares outside the US were trading at a discount of approximately 28%.

Lower valuations do not guarantee stronger future returns, but they may provide investors with an opportunity to diversify while accessing companies with established dividend policies.

The appeal of lower-volatility dividend investing

One example is the Franklin International Low Volatility High Dividend Index ETF. The fund selects companies in developed markets outside the US based on relatively attractive dividend yields and lower volatility in both share prices and corporate earnings.

The ETF held 198 companies and reported a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 12.4. Its 30-day yield was 3.13%, compared with a weighted dividend yield of 1.11% for the S&P 500. It also returned 20.6% during 2026, according to the figures cited in the original report.

The strategy aims to provide investors with income while reducing some of the price fluctuations associated with more volatile investments. International companies have also traditionally relied more heavily on dividends than share buybacks to distribute excess cash to shareholders. This can encourage management teams to maintain financial discipline and avoid cutting payouts.

Japan and Singapore were highlighted as particularly interesting markets. Corporate-governance reforms in Japan have helped improve business efficiency and create opportunities for dividend investors. Singapore also offers attractive income potential, with equity dividend yields reported at around 4%.

These businesses represent different industries and geographic markets, giving investors exposure beyond the large US technology companies that dominate the S&P 500. Their reported 2026 total returns also varied, demonstrating that international dividend stocks can offer both income and capital-growth potential, although individual results differ considerably.

Diversification without abandoning US growth

Reducing exposure to the S&P 500 does not necessarily mean abandoning American shares or the AI investment trend. US technology companies may continue to deliver strong earnings growth, and international investments can underperform when US equities lead the market.

However, combining US growth stocks with dividend-paying companies from other developed markets may help create a more balanced portfolio. International shares can provide different sources of income, potentially lower valuations and exposure to industries that are less prominent in the US market.

For long-term investors, the objective is not simply to chase the highest dividend yield. It is to build a portfolio that balances income, company quality, valuation and risk. Dividend payments are never guaranteed, share prices can decline, and overseas investments carry currency and market risks.

Ultimately, looking beyond the S&P 500 could help investors reduce concentration risk while discovering attractive dividend opportunities across global markets.
