The $0 Myth: Why the Best Startups Don’t Raise Money First
Most founders treat fundraising like a rite of passage. They polish the deck, chase warm intros, and treat a term sheet as proof of concept. The opposite is often true.
The startups that later raise large rounds usually spend their earliest months doing something unsexy: generating revenue or extreme user love with almost no capital. They force the product to survive contact with real customers instead of surviving contact with investors.
Raising money too early creates three silent killers:
It delays the painful feedback loop that reveals whether anyone actually wants the product.
It forces founders to optimize for metrics that look good in a board deck rather than metrics that keep the company alive.
It turns the founder’s identity into “fundraiser” instead of “operator.”
The most interesting companies of the last decade — many of which later raised hundreds of millions — spent their first 12–18 months looking almost unfundable on paper. They had ugly interfaces, small numbers, and messy operations. What they had was proof that someone would pay or return.
Cash is a tool, not a scoreboard. The founders who treat it that way usually end up with more of it.
